It can’t be true.  A whole decade!

Should I or shouldn’t I?  Maybe I should open a coffee shop? (there weren’t so many back in 2010).  No . . . stick with what you know best.  Could I or couldn’t I?

Ten years ago my youngest son was 2 years old and I had just had 8 years off since the birth of his big brother in 2002, and my middle son in 2005.  I felt I knew more about coffee shops than marketing at that point – even though my entire career prior to the children had been in marketing.

So in September 2009 I decided to go back to university to get my confidence back.  Now THAT was an experience.  A year at Nottingham Trent University doing my Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Diploma.  I was 37, everyone else was about 12.  Well, OK, 20.  Still, I was old enough to be their mother!  This didn’t do a lot for my confidence . . initially . . . until the studying started.  This is when I realised what all of my experience counted for.  A LOT. I knew a lot!  I could do a lot!  I passed the course with flying colours and felt great.  So, on January 31st 2010 I registered the company Fill the Gap Marketing Ltd (I went all in and went Limited from day one, if you are going to do something, you might as well go full throttle!)

I even got the courage to apply to the Chartered Institute of Marketing to be a Chartered Marketer – and I was accepted and have maintained that status and privilege for 10 years, giving my customers peace of mind.

The initial aim was to be a freelance marketing manager to help businesses who didn’t have a marketing manager of their own.  This ethos is still at the very core of Fill the Gap Marketing.

Nothing much has changed over the last 10 years, but at the same time, everything has changed.

Fill the Gap Marketing is now providing a marketing TEAM for businesses who don’t have any internal marketing resource (or providing additional support for businesses who do).  I am so proud that the business is even bigger than myself.  I have recruited some fabulous people with skills that I don’t have, so we can offer a complete solution.  Whatever the marketing gap a company might have, we can fill it.

Over the past ten years I have worked with some incredible people, both part of the FTG team, customers and suppliers, along with the support of my friends and family.  I would like to thank each and every one of them.

My thoughts now, of course, turn to the next ten years and I am so excited about what the future holds.  We have built such a fantastic platform on which to grow Fill the Gap Marketing even further.  We know what we are good at: Being a marketing team ‘on demand’; we know who we can help and we know why they need our help and what they need us to do to help them to grow their business.

We have a plan in place to deliver this in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and beyond from our relatively new base in Bingham.

We have lots of things planned to celebrate, including lots of useful top 10 tips blogs, sponsorship opportunities, a social event, gifts, some unique promotions, a special anniversary logo and new website.

Follow us on our social channels (we’re basically on them all!) and please get involved.  Share your ten with us.  Post your pics of yourself or your team doing a ‘high ten’ – everyone who enters will be put in a draw for a donation of £100 to a charity of their choice.  (it felt too mean to just say £10, so £10 x £10=£100!).

Please check out the new website.  Nothing has changed.  Everything has changed.
